Long time I don't write a journal entry, but this one asked for it.
First of all, I usually don't mind when people don't like art that I do. I do take well written critics seriously. If people take their time to evaluate something I did, I'll take my time to respond, regardless if I agree or not. Trust me ... I've VERY self-critical about my art. I take my time, I don't do stuff just "to do" ... I even scrap entire parts of a drawing if it doesn't turn up the way I want.
So, let's talk about Yrel. She got a lot more visibility than my drawings usually do, and it ended up on reddit and other places on the internet. I personally don't follow anything on reddit, but someone told me my drawing was there, and I decided to check it. Initially I took the comments seriously but then I had to simply laugh.
I reaaaaaaaaally respect other people's opinion ... but boy, try to have an argument. So I'll use this journal to give my point of view about the major "points" being discussed there (and in some other places).
"She doesn't look like Yrel".
There's only 2 oficial sources of her. Her oficial artwork at blizzcon: ravyncat.files.wordpress.com/2…
Her oficial model ingame: i.imgur.com/Okjc4ZJ.jpg
So what we get from this: blue/purpleish lips ... light blue/slightly purple skin tone, white hair, the shape of her horns. Freckles is something I personally add on my drawings because "screw it, I think it's pretty". I like it .. I like to give my personal view on the character, so I like to add small details like scars, skin marks, freckles, moles, jewelry ... this kind of thing.
"Her armor is a platekini. Her armor doesn't look like the original one".
This one I think it's amazing. If you google Yrel, you'll see there's at least a half a dozen different versions of her armor. So there's no rule here. I simply mix-match the different versions of armor she have, and make my own. I got the "star-shaped" details on her breastplate and adapted to a different shape. I got the T4 paladin shoulders (the one that Maraad uses) and made a golden/silver version of it ... applied the same star-shape on the legs ... It's basically my version of her armor. Fanart doesn't mean you have to COPY the character. It means you are doing your own interpretation of that character.
Then we get to the platekini issue. It's no surprise that the most famous cosplayers out there show skin. It's no surprise that most female super-heroes have hot bodies. Let's see other major warcraft characters, shall we?
Tyrande - A priest in the game
maybe her version on Heroes of the Storm: a.images.blip.tv/ForceSC2Strat… -> datass
Alexstrasza - Considered the "mother" of all life in the game lore ... "the aspect of life" after all.
Or maybe Ysera, her sister
How about Jaina?
So yeah, does Yrel show some skin? Yeah she does. You know why professional cosplayers show some skin? because they love their body, they are proud of it. They worked hard for it, they deserve. They are not slutty. That's your opinion about people showing their bodies.
No ... it doesn't make sense to have a huge gap in plates in your armor. But you know why this is not a problem? Because IT DOESN'T MATTER. It's a freaking fantasy game. Characters lift weapons that no human could possibly lift, they have shoulders/helms with floating things going about .. equipment spitting fire from the joints. THIS is a set of equipment in the game: media.mmo-champion.com/images/…
Oh and btw, this is a paladin set from the game on a female character: static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/i…
On my pandaren drawings one of them is carrying a KEG on her back. Did any of you try to do ANYTHING with a keg on your back? And I don't see people giving me crap for putting a 15L keg on the back of a humanoid PANDA. Not a single word about it. But then you show a belly and suddenly some people go all moralistic about how sexist the image is, that is just a pair of boobs in a platekini and whatnot. C'mon, give me a break.
So plz ... spare me of the false morale. If you don't like her outfit .. or don't like the drawing and can't make a constructive criticism. I REALLY couldn't care less. =*
