Courage by krysdecker Courage by krysdecker
Ok .. a couple of months ago i decided to make a Zelda fanart. So i thought about the dozens of images that were imprinted in my memory by playing all those games .. and it was a tough choice to decide which way to do.

Until i realized what the game was all about, and then my job was pretty easy.

I could have chosen a lot of different images ... could have done all those fancy images of combat, flashing things, blur, all that shit .. but i think this one, in it's simplicity, is much better to describe the game. If you take all the locations, all things Link does in all the games, it boils down to this.

I remember the 1st time i played Ocarina of Time in christmas night on the year that it launched. I after a couple of hours exploring the village, figuring out what to do, i got into the 1st dungeon. And that is the image of the final boss of it.

Its that simple. You walk into Gohma's Lair, there's no sound besides your footsteps, all is dark and Navi (the fairy) is flying around, until you hear some "cracking sound" from something moving in the room .. you look around until you spot in the ceilling. It's jumps down in front of you .. stare down, Link unsheath his sword and tiny woden shield and get ready ... Navi ready to assist him.

This is pretty much what all games from the series are about. A kid (or young guy) simply moving foward by sheer courage to save someone, or everyone .. He's not the badass hero that nearly every game now has .. that kill legions of enemies.

He's just this:

A kid with his tiny sword and wooden shield.

And people wonder why i think they are the best series of all time =p ..

ps. The image is sharper on "download"

ps2. you can find the videos that cover most of the work done in this one, in here…

Thanks, I tried to make a realistic view of what Gohma would be =)

And you did a master piece, once again congratulations for your art work.

The first time I tried this fight I was sitting in a corner hiding behind the shield while dozens of those small creatures that hatch from the eggs where jumping at me and I was in panic thinking "help, what should I do? Aaah, I'm dying!" xD

Very well captured!

This is stunning. :O_o:

I agree.  That is probably part of why the Zelda series is my favorite (of fantasy, that is).  He is normal.  He earns his powerful weapons and item sand spells through sheer badassery.  He fights things that lay low entire kingdoms.  He does it all as a normal human being (with elf ears).  All of his power he earned, through blessings or fighting his way through dungeons.  He could be me.

Faved this some time ago, but I never left a comment. Just wanted to say, excellent job, and you really took me back to my childhood with this one. I remember when Gohma was practically the scariest thing ever, and defeating her felt like both a victory in the game and a triumph over my own intimidation. Ocarina of Time was the first game I remember being so immersed in, and you do it justice, which is not something I say lightly.

glad you liked it ... I plan on doing other drawings of all OoT big bosses.

it's kind of a personal project to make a small homage to the game, which I have great memories of it =)

That's great, I look forward to seeing them!

And yeah OoT is just the bee's knees. I keep wishing they would remake it with modern graphics. That would be astoundingly awesome.

The depth of this work, and the scale you made Gohma compared to link is just...phenomenal. I love this piece of work. It's so dark and foreboding, but it's amazing. It truly does embody courage. Great work. Amazing painting.

I absolutely love your work! This particular piece I felt went hand in hand to an article I wrote about taking risks in creative work. I used your image to go with my article on PsychCentral. I credited your work and posted a link back to you. Here is the link to the article:…

glad you like them. while I don't produce as much work as I'd want to, I think that givin time for my ideas to sink in and "evolve" over time in my head before I put them on paper/screen is giving me really good results so far =)

Oh my God Gohma! The first time I see her I was so scared so couldn't move correctly to kill her! :D I was a little girl back then :)

Amazing! I would love to see the Zelda series turn to a darker look like this.
JogoLee Featured By Owner Apr 15, 2014  Hobbyist Artist
Peerless composition. Given Zelda's overall colorful atmosphere, I think the fact that you pull off such great detail without losing the soul of the subject is what makes this one of the best Zelda tributes I've seen. What makes this picture great is the obvious consideration you put into the tone of it, without it, I think this image would lose a lot of what makes it connect with Zelda so well.

I almost don't want to see what your interpretation of the Dead Hand would be.
krysdecker Featured By Owner Apr 16, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I plan on doing one for each boss, but that might take a while =)

glad you liked this one

I am completely blown away by how spectacular this fanart is- I'm literally at a loss to describe how I feel it perfectly captures the essence of what you were trying to convey with it. Absolutely phenomenal piece of art <3

Ocarina of Time was such an important game to me. As a child, it taught me that anyone can be the hero, and that even if it's not an easy journey, and you may lose people along the way, that in the end if you persevere you'll be able to accomplish anything.
This is an absolutely stunning piece, and really depicts the theme of the game. Gorgeous.

I've spent the last twenty minutes browsing through Zelda series drawings and paintings posted here on DeviantArt and this one struck me as what it's all about. For that, I thank you. You could not have summarized it in a more perfect way. The thing that pulls me into the story of Link and his journey is not the amazing world, or even the story (ok, that's a lie, both of those things are awesome), it's the amazing characters and the large impact that Link makes over and over, as such a small being. He really is just a "kid with a tiny sword and a wooden shield". Who would've thought that a video game would be so deep in it's meanings and ideas. This is perfection.

I remember when I got to this part for the first time, I was scared. See, I have a fear of giant spiders ever since I was young, so I wasn't looking forward to looking up.
Now, I can kill Gohma in less than thirty seconds. Hell, I once got under ten on OoT 3D.
Girfan2000 Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
If only Gohma was this terrifying in the game. This wasn't what scared me. It was the Dead Hand. *shudders* Why nintendo why? The scariest thing of my childhood was the Giant Spiders from Resident Evil 2. So ill take the dead hand over those.
krysdecker Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I hated the 1st time I heard those zombies that jumped on you, shriek and freeze you in place.

That was REALLY mean.
