Death Dealer by krysdecker Death Dealer by krysdecker
for the detail version, check this: [link]

this drawing started in a very particular way. I was reading some book in my bed ( i believe one of the Saxon chronicles from Bernard Cornwell ) and by reading the description of a character i had this img (or something similar to that) in my mind, got a random notebook i got near my bed and quickly sketched the "idea" ...

in the following day i had 2 major inspirations for her. The Death dealer, which is a guy that Frank Frazetta has several drawings of ... and some of the woman Luis Royo draw. So basically i got those "inspirations" and started to draw my own one.

Then it was a matter of minutes for me to give it a small "wow death knight" frost theme, since i have a dk since wotlk beta and always liked the "frost death theme" they had.

Its not exactly a fan art from wow, because it is not a particular character, nor the death knight class ... its just my version of the general idea of a death knight in the fantasy world.

Took me around 60h or so (mainly because of my progress in the 1st 20h was very slow) and 60-70 layers ...

And yes, i used at least a dozen of references for the background, horse etc ..

She can be my Death Dealer any night! She can bite me and give me neck anytime. I would love to make out with her, and give her my baby.

Definitely a brilliant piece, and I'm not usually a fan of 'death knights'. But this piece spoke to me with its great amount of ambience and appreciating the amount of detail that went into the background. =)

It all looks really good, but somehow I got the feeling that the character itself and the background are two separate paintings. Honestly, don't you have that feeling when you look at it?

Well technically, wouldn't it be 60-70 different paintings because that's how many layers there are?

I think that you're getting this feeling because the horse and rider (who are in the middle ground) are really crisp and in focus with sharp edges, while the landscape starts blurry in the background and becomes more clear in the foreground. If this was real and you took the picture with a camera, the focus could be narrow, with just the rider in focus, medium with the horse, rider, and surrounding area in focus, or wide with both the fore, middle, and background in focus.

Since this is a fantasy piece and we are suspending our belief, and it is a painting and not a photo, I think it is more than acceptable to widen the range of focus, and or pick and choose what we want the viewer to be able to look at. After all, our eyes do adjust to what we look at.

Of all your works, this is one of your best, really. You know your basics, all the trees, both background and foreground, pointing toward the character. Colours maybe just a bit too warm for the theme in my opinion, but on the other hand that actually gives a good contrast. Amount of work and technical level is astounding.

Armor reminds me of a clever mix of Dragon Age origins mage robes, wow's DKs and pure medieval chainmail

Let me analyze it futher, and as usual, I'll have plenty of questions for you :D

the picture actually started as a completely snowy place. The problem was that it was way too monocromatic in my opinion. Was basically a variation of white and blue.

Usually i try to play a bit with colors in the background (if you notice dragonqueen and warsong, they have a very colorfull background) simply .. because i like it =p. Sunset in particular is the best for me, since it provides a big range of colors to work with (the hues for the background were based on real sunset pictures on snowy forests).

In the end i think the purple/orange in the upper half and the white/blue/darkgreen in the bottom half was a nice mix.
